Can I change my DLI?

International students in Canada may change their DLIs during their studies in Canada. IRCC understands that students may want to change their program/ college/ university mid-way. However, it needs to be done in the right way, and IRCC needs to be informed in a timely manner.

A student may wish to change their DLI for a variety of reasons, such as:

Changing the field of study
Changing level of study
Changing their specialization
Moving to a different city/ province
Not being satisfied with the current program

The student may require details such as their study permit number, new school’s DLI number, and new Student ID when making the request.
Also, they must keep in mind that their new program of study should start within 150 days after they cease to study at the previous institution.

Can I work in the meanwhile before my new program starts?

Students in Canada, may have work authorization only while they are enrolled in full time studies. When changing their DLI, students may have work authorization depending on the stage and circumstances when they change their DLI

What happens if I don’t inform IRCC?

Not informing IRCC about their DLI change can land a student in a spot and have some severe consequences. Therefore, it is suggested that the students let them know about the change as soon as possible.
