PGWP FOR STUDENTS FROM OUTSIDE CANADA

The post-graduation work permit allows students who have graduated from a designated learning institution to gain valuable Canadian work experience. A PGWP allows eligible students to work full time, at almost any job, any location, any employer upon completion of their studies in Canada. It is considered the first step towards advancing your professional goals, to realize the full experience of your Canadian education and may also play a vital role in supporting your application for becoming a permanent resident of Canada, should that be your long-term goal.

Students may be granted a Postgraduate work permit of upto 3 years, depending on the length of their qualification.

Requirements

You are eligible for a PGWP if:

  • You completed a program of study that lasted at least eight months, thereby obtaining a degree, diploma, or a certificate.
  • You completed at least 50% of your program in Canada (however some exceptions to this criterion have been prevalent during COVID).
  • You studied in full-time each academic session.

You won’t be able to get a PGWP under the following conditions:

  • You completed a course or program of study that was primarily studying English or French as a second language
  • You completed a general interest or a self-improvement course.
  • You completed an ineligible program at a private career college.

Is my institution eligible?

The following DLIs are eligible:

  • A public post-secondary institutions
  • A private or public secondary or post-secondary institution in Quebec offering qualifying programs of 900 hours or longer
  • A Canadian, private institution authorized by provincial statute to confer degrees. For example certain Associate Degrees provided by private institutions in BC are eligible programs.
  • Please note that not all programs offered by a private institution are PGWP eligible.
